Its been a while for me, but can anyone tell me if you can use a
topping insert to make a thread with less threads per inch or more
threads per inch.

Example: Topping Thread insert for 1-20-UN Could be used on a coaser
thread such as 16 pitch? I know the topping feature wont effective but
in a pinch this is done where I work

Thanks
Mark

IMHO Mark, in a pinch, its fine to use a pitch specific threading
insert to do threads that are slightly more coarse than the specs for
the insert. 16tpi threads with a 20 insert is pushing it though
because the 16 is going to be a deeper "V" than the 20. You could just
grind off the "topping" portions of the insert to give you the depth
reach you need without affecting the top of the thread.

You also have to be careful using pitch specific inserts to do threads
that are more fine than the insert specs (ie. using a 20 to do a 28)
because of the radius produced at the root of the thread. It can
create interference with the mating thread.

Why not just have some 60 deg. non-topping inserts like an AG-60 on
hand for emergencies?

Thanks Carl
We do have regular 60 degree inserts, I was just curious just in case
we didnt have the right insert (which happens more than I like)
