Compared to what? A manual mill or other conversational hardware like
ProtoTrak http://www.southwesternindustries.com/swi/ or MillPower Acurite
http://www.auto-met.com/acurite/millpower.htm to mention a few. They all
have their pros and cons and the more you spend on the newest and best model
of each the better they will be. Great tools for proto type and relative
small run jobs or a budget that does not include a full CNC. The three axis
ProtoTrak is really nice to operate and I like the features of the Acurite
also. You have to have used them all to really know for sure.

I was told.............don't buy a cnc machine over 5 years old.

This after I bought a 10 year old ('79) Makino FNC80 with a Fanuc 3000
control. Had monitor and DNC fitted and got tool the changer sorted after
god knows how many years idle. Bought it from Hardinge at Exeter where
speaking to the operator it had spent most if not all its life machining CI
tailstocks.

It was 21 years old when I bailed out for various reasons..............had
to sell it for scrap value......almost 7 tons. Guy that collected it was
told to cut all cables, don't bother wasting time
disconnecting..........bloody near cried but had to be done.

so does the motto apply...........its up to you.

If I had an extra $20K I'd get it and put it in my garage with all the
other good stuff I bought off ebay and never use <G>

I wouldn't pay more than $2500 for it.

haas minimill is 30,000, only 10 grand more than that knee mill. 6000 rpm,
tool changer, etc...???

I paid less for my Supermax Rebel 1, fully enclosed with 20 ATC. But
mine is a G code only machine.

But it's got the Bridgeport name so someone will most likely buy it.

Thank You,
Randy

Yes ...It has the latest 3rd axis conversion. I must have installed 3 or
4 dozen in my territory with very few problems.
.Really nice machine ...however ..

Z can be a royal pain in the ass when going from 2 to 3 axis mode. I made a
nice retrofit for the Z changeover (does away with that stupid Allen) but
BPT went belly up before it was evaluated
Typically Z has slightly less then 5" but to convert from 3 to 2 axis mode
takes just a couple minutes.
Comes standard with a mono SVGA, Do yourself a favor if you buy it put an
LCD in its place... it's really spiffy when the color is available.
That machine will do a 4" circle with XY interpolation with about .004"
tolerance .. not bad for a machine brand new around 37K.
DX-32 control is piece of cake ( beware of CIB mini though )

What? My totally clapped-out 1938 round-ram Bridgeport with my
home-made CNC retrofit will do better than that. The circular
error is about .0015" and that is nearly all backlash. When you
get up to about 7" diameter, then the wear in the middle of the
table starts to add more error to it.

What, what?? You are getting .00075" on a "1938" BPT with backlash using XY
interpolation?
Sounds like a happy Bridgeport owner to me.

Yes, I'm pretty happy with it, but have a BOSS knee that I am scraping
in and will eventually get on there, so I can get more Y travel. (The
original round-ram machine had about 9" of Y travel, then sometime in
the 1950's they made the knee longer.

No, I am getting about .0015" backlash on the worst axis, and a little
under .001" on the best. But, I also have some non-linear movement in
the slides due to wear. The bigger the part gets, the worse the
deviation is. I am not using backlash compensation because at least on
older versions of the software I'm using (EMC) it made things worse, and
I haven't tried it since.

The Radial runout I was getting was without tweaking, and I think it was all
BPT guaranteed... no one ever complained.
I saw a guy put a tool changer on a 3 axis trak. I think he only did it to
brag because he could have changed by hand almost as quick not to mention
the fact he took the alignment pin out due to there was no way he could get
spindle orientation.
I have always wondered why BPT never made a Knee axis. The machine was a
natural for putting a counter balance inside the main casting

Oh, I should mention that one of the retrofit components was a set of
high-accuracy ground NSK ballscrews that were still in very good shape.
They are too small diameter, and there is some bowing or compression
that produces an error that looks a lot like backlash. The Y Acme screw
off that machine had more than .050" of backlash when I pulled it out.
Totally unusable for any kind of precision work, without some other kind
of axis measuring device.

As for 1938, the machine is serial number 1388. And, I think Bridgeport
started at SN 1000.

Well, this is not exactly a new machine, although the ways and
quill look pretty good. It looks like it is slightly newer than
the ones we have in our shop at the University. Ours have '486
computers, but this one may have something newer. The servo
amps are Motion Science, and I don't think they make this model
any more, they have been bought out. The spindle is R-8,
definitely cheaper than NMTB30, which the professional
machinists feel is more rigid. Also, with quill Z axis, you
only get 5" of travel. Some other machines with the knee Z axis
will have a lot more travel under CNC control.

This control allows you to use the machine manually, which can
be faster for simple stuff, use it like a drill press, etc.

Now, the bad news. I had a bad experience with Machinery Values
in 2001. I bought a well-used Sheldon 15" lathe from them,
through a similar eBay auction, for $2650 plus shipping. They
stated the machine was in "excellent" condition, right in the
ad. Well, I don't consider .013" wear in the front way as
excellent. (One slightly exonerating point is the Sheldon
design does not leave an obvious ridge on the ways to see and
feel the wear. The ways LOOKED good, but they are machinery
dealers, and should KNOW better than depending on a visible
ridge in the ways.) It only took me a few minutes after I got
it inside to know I had serious problems.

Also, the ad stated everything in the picture, such as coolant
tank, steady rest and 10" Buck 3-jaw chuck came with the lathe.
None of these items was in the shipment. It took a MONTH of
calling them to get a shipment. The coolant tank was OK, but
the steady was for some other lathe and didn't fit the ways.
The chuck was crashed, and only 8". (Again, the crash was not
obvious, but once I got the lathe together, it became obvious
the jaws would not hold anything at right angles to the
backplate. Regrinding the jaws didn't fix it, either. I have
never located exactly WHAT on that chuck is sprung, but it is
bad enough that I would not sell it on eBay.) They did
eventually ship that stuff in a very nice wood crate custom made
for the 3 items.

When I contacted Machinery Values with the bad news on the
lathe's condition, all they would say was that I could still
return it for a full refund - except I'd end up paying shipping
both ways! YIKES!

So, I just thought I'd tell you my experiences, and let you
think about it. But, the price sounds WAY high for used.

I should have added some more info. If you don't use it a lot,
shut the machine off. That should keep the maintenance down a
bit. The hard drive and PC motherboard tend to go out every few
years. The motion control card is really expensive. Our shop
uses them every day, and leaves them turned on all the time,
nights, over the weekend, etc. They usually end up with a
service call of $1000+ once a year per machine.
