Mastercam vs Surfcam costs?

What are the ballpark current costs for Mastercam, Surfcam? 3axis, 4
axis? Also, what is maintenance costing now?

How about VX, Jon?

ca
Clay, Not sure of the initial costs of either, but
maintenance on Smurfcam was 15% of the CURRENT price of your
software configuration the last time I bought maintenance.
If you aren't current with maintenance the cost is 18% to
get back on. Not sure if these costs vary from one VAR to
the next.

Steve

Dunno of the current costs of VX, but we paid $2K a seat for their "end
to end" suite. Mold design, PDM, 3 axis cam, etc...

It was a special 2 years ago, I THINK it would have cost us $10K for all
of that at the time.

It's far more capable on the Cad end of things versus Mastercam, or
Surfcam. I haven't seen the CAM end of things in Mastercam or Surfcam
lately, so I can't comment on it.

Steve,

I am not sure the end to end deal is still around.... I am only
interested in the mill/lathe CAM capability. Does it even do lathe? I
don't recall seeing that either.

So I was researching VX, and was surprised to see no mention whatsoever
of 4th axis capabilities? Is this true? Jb where are you?

Don't you have to pay at least that each year too?

Yup. But if I choose NOT to pay it, the software will still work. It's
not like Think3's subscription service.

Clay, You may want to ask this question on Practical Machinist:

"How about VX, Jon?"

I will be moving back to SolidWorks after many years of being away. VX
is not being developed and marketed like I feel it should be.

I still love modeling in VX but no lathe module, no wire EDM module
and the fact that SolidWorks is finally moving in the right direction
is enough to get me to go back.

I'm also very seriously thinking about starting my own CADCAM forum as
I feel I can offer something far better than what exists now.

Since my question was about CAM, what is right/wrong with ONEcnc? I have
been hearing a lot about it. What is the pricing structure, and how long
does the demo last, and what are the demo limitations?

It's what jb "uses".
What more does anyone need to know?

BTW, an update note:
Somebody updated his web site...

"Since my question was about CAM, what is right/wrong with ONEcnc?"

I only have a few minutes this morning. Here is just a quick overview
of just some of the problems OneCNC XR2 has:

No geometry to toolpath associativity

No support for mulitple fixture offsets.

No way to control if tool 1 goes to all parts or if all the tools
finish one part at a time.

Piss poor solid cut part rendering.

Help files badly out of date and many subjects not covered at all.

Unable to save or import a solid cut part rendering (stl file) so you
can use what you cut as the basis for the next program.

Only one feedrate allowed per toolpath, so no way to slow the feedrate
into corners.

No support for highspeed machining.

Can't import a native SolidWorks file.

Can't import a Parasolid file.

Lathe package not developed at the rate the mill package is.

No lathe gang tool support.

Where's that idiot that was claiming that associativity
was not needed?
What was his name? Tip of the forebrain .... rhymes with banker?
bunko?

Where's that guy that just loves to stand at the control & make
random MDI edits all day (unless the boss is watching)?

Tried reading the instructions & thinking yet?

OneCNC XR2 does not allow you to back up when chaining and this is a
major pain in the ass when you have complex geometry. If you have a
problem while chaining or change your mind OneCNC XR2 forces to start
the chaining process all over again!

I use OneCNC XR2 every day. What else would you like to know?

I would like to know what it feels like to be banned from another

Is it REALLY better than sliced bread?
Does it always fall buttered side down?

No support for multiple coordinate systems.

No concept of air / wall geometry.

Editing existing operations could be made to be a lot easier!

Why are Gibbscam or FeatureCAM not being considered?

How much air do you want to cut into unfried shapes?
