Hi All,
I need to tap about 2400 holes thru .280 thick wall of Inconel 718 rings.

3/4-10UNJC 3B

Carboloy applications guy suggests a $280 thread hob will -run the whole job-
by moving it down after the first 3 teeth are dull etc.

Local tool distributor says he has a $75 tap that may last 50-60 holes.

Anyone out there whos -been there done that-?

That thread is big enough to use an insert thread mill. Just change the
insert when it gets dull.

Tapping of superalloys is almost universally switching over to thread
milling. Emuge is strong in this particular area.

I'd start looking for cutting fluids. EP, chlorinated, .......

try insertable thread milling with throw away inserts ..controls easy
thru normal cutter comp.. and last quite awhile... tool holder should be
around 200 bucks and inserts sold in boxes of 10 will be around 10 bucks
each.. careful on what grade you buy..

Ken,
My name is Andrew Strauchen and I am a Product Engineer for OSG. We
have a 3/4-10 thread mill designed for exotic materials (ie Inconel
718, Stainless, Titanium). List price is $240. Previous tests in
Inconel 718 (48HRC) yeilded approximately 84 holes, running at 175
SFM. This is an awesome tool for exotics and is available from stock
from our Chicago warehouse. We have honestly not had better success
with any other tool, and I can provide the subroutine program if
necessary as well.

And it held the 3B?
How many holes can you get at lower SFMs?
What impact did you find that cutting fluids had? Best/worst .....

Ken also has a .280" thick wall thru the Inconel 718 which he's
(seems a bit strange, really) tapping that 3/4-10UNJC 3B thread ...
how deep were your holes? To compare .....
